Opening Musical Sequences

I don't know about others, but for me the musical score in a movie can make or break a movie. Especially specific scenes, high points and opening sequences. One example is in the movie Some Kind of Wonderful. The opening sequence is incredible for me. I find it odd that other then recordings from the actual movie, I have been as of yet unable to get my hands on a clean track preserving the incredible sound coming through on the movie mix when watching on theatre system. Listening to the link below with my cheapy earphones on my laptop just doesn't do it justice. In some ways it slightly reminds me of music I heard many many years ago from Munich Machine in the disco days if anyone remembers back that far. Did I just say disco?..........oops.....sorry. Anyways, the full version with lyrics from Propaganda is okay, but I prefer just the Instrumental from the opening sequence.....

Have Fun, Go Mad by Blair Mackichan

Blair is a British Pop Top 40 studio rat and jingle writer.
Blair's pop credits include Deep Forest, Alison Moyet, Wet Wet Wet, Jocelyn Brown, Lisa Stansfield and Lily Allen.

I have the soundtrack CD (from 1998). It includes songs by Dido, Jamiroquai, Aimee Mann, Abra Moore and the Brand New Heavies (among others). I just pulled it off the shelf, put it on and am dancing around while getting ready for work.

So, this is good getting ready for work music eh???? If you have Brand New Heavies in the mix, you can't go wrong on that one! I hope your dancing sequence wasn't akin to Tom Cruise in risky business... I prefer the singing in the shower music set.

Like Tom? No, more emotional like Tina.

Not really my cup of tea, but I see your point about upbeat.

Jimbo, Thanx again for finding it and adding it. I know, the tune had to "grow" on me at first as well and then I found the energy of it to be infectious for some reason.Who can say what makes music "hit or miss" with someone, huh? The full version on the soundtrack CD is a better song to judge. I generally do not like any hip-hop sound, but this one and the opening song for "Something's Gotta Give" are the only 2 exceptions for me. The music director for "gotta give" said that he chose it after Jack Nicholson's character who owned a hip-hop label and was a womanizer (which, sadly, pretty much sums up hip-hop...). What a funny thing for me, to be naming that genre AT ALL!!! =) What is your favorite opening song that differs from your normal taste in music, but maybe is well chosen for the movie? La,la,la...artgirl.

I'll have to think about that one. I'm pretty eclectic, however when choosing what kind of music I like least, I'd have to say that I have very little tolerance for most rap music. I'll have to think if there was an opening sequence using rap that I liked. Any ideas for candidates?

Hi Jimbo...I agree, I HATE rap. It may sound as if I like it because I mentioned the 2 movies above, but only because they were mild and exceptions. I find it mostly irratating, belittling to women and of very little musical merit at all. I'm sorry if I steered the discussion to the negative and using a genre that I myself react negatively to...I'll try to choose better scores that truly deserve attention if I add another OS, okay? How about Neil Simon's classic "The Goodbye Girl" ? la,la,la, artgirl.

Every James Bond movie includes an original state of the art opening sequence. Many modern composers have contributed, including Bill Conti, Marvin Hamlish, John Barry, Hal David, Tim Rice, Carole Bayer Sager, George Martin, U2, Madonna, Sheryl Crow and Paul McCartney. Attached is Chris Cornell (Soundgarden, Audioslave) from the opening of Casino Royale singing. "You Know My Name". Every fan can be sure that the Quantum of Solace will have a jaw dropping opening sequence too.
