Hate to break it to you Bob, but that's *exactly* what I'm doing now - joining this stupid discussion / "community" because I'm pissed off enough about Netflix at the moment.

In fact, that's the only reason I even realized that this site existed - I wanted a place to complain and voice my opinion where I could be reasonably be assured that at least one key employee from Netflix would read and understand my / our complaints. Digg, Slashdot, and the rest aside.

Hey guys. I'm moping around kinda bummed the profiles are going away. My wife never rated much in her profile, but still...

Are people still arguing about the Netflix - Ning Connection? Come on, this is old news. I was running all things community at Netflix and i was looking at different forums and how they might change the way we at Netflix thought about community... and one of the members suggested I try NING. Which I did.

The last thing i did before leaving netflix -- and this wasn't sneaky, it was just something i put in a pipeline a while earlier and it released finally -- was to connect netflix community to ning. I created the community.netflix.com subdomain and made it point to this ning community, which is officially called netflixcommunity.ning.com.

I reminded Netflix that they might want to remove that link once i left. But they didn't. Not yet anyway. I believe they will. And i believe it is not that important to them so it isn't even worth an engineer doing whatever needs to be done just yet. I suppose they're letting it run for awhile to see what we do, if this stays useful or gets more useful or flounders and fades...

I think that the fact is that they have left that link suggests that at some level they are okay with us. May even like us doing this. I agree with other comments here: what's not to like?

So yes, there is some residual confusion, and yes, it's clear that some netflix folks read this and participate when they have a little time. If too many people got confused (more than 1% dare i say?) they'd just turn off their link to here. I don't believe they'd ever claim to own this nor would they ask we turn it off. We're free to do whatever here, even after we quit netflix if that's what we do. Netflix is a good service at a good price. I think that's all they want to be, and all I really expect from them. If they kill some feature, truth is, they're still trying to keep the service as good as possible for the price. Gripe all you want about missing features (from the profiles to the purple dude to RTW), all in all, and i can only speak for myself, i like what i get for the money. They've got a lot of discs, they get them to me regularly, the discs are in at least as good condition, and usually better condition, than my local HollywoodVideo, and the site is up when i need it. I'd swear it loses some of ratings from time to time, but i can neither repeat it nor prove it.... anyway, i have over a thousand ratings and it occassionally suggests something interesting, but not usually.

So there you have it. I"m not a netflix apologist, i'm just a sentient being in a commerical world full of goods and services. And they'd have to screw the site and service up something awful (or something truly remarkable would have to be invented) for me to go to another source for my comprehensive movie watching.

Yeah, it sucks to be on the receiving end of some on NF's "enhancements", doesn't it?

Now imagine your wife had spent days rating movies, writing reviews, establishing friends, watching her reviewer ranking go up and down... Only to be told that it would all go POOF. This little household is not a cheerful one these days.
