Netflix Community Guidelines (All Should Read)

The following Community Guidelines are here to help you understand what it means to be a member of this Netflix Community. (1) Don't forget that this website is unaffiliated with Netflix, Inc, and is run by regular folks who join here independently. (2) Participation here does not necessarily mean you are a current Netflix subscriber, nor do you even need to be. (3) This is NOT Netflix Customer Service. While other members here might be able to help you with problems, the only way to truly address issues with your Netflix membership is to contact Customer Service via the Netflix website, where phone numbers are provided under “Help.”

WHAT TO DO

* Do play nice.
We're a community of many types of people, who all have the right to feel comfortable and who may not think what you think, believe what you believe or see what you see. So, be polite and respectful in your interactions with other members.

* Do link up to key elements from the Netflix website.
This enhances the community experience – from including your “Influence ranking” or a link to your external profile page, or adding feeds of your Queue, your Reviews or special “Top 10 Lists” you’ve made. Yes it would be great if all this happened at the Netflix site, but it doesn’t. But you can connect up a lot to here.

* Do moderate your content.
You need to take responsibility for ensuring that what you upload is appropriate. If your judgment proves to be poor, we'll send you a warning or ban you from participating altogether. We’d rather not do this. Just be responsible.

* Try to keep the topic specific to the forum you are posting in. And look for forums that already exist on the topic you’re interested in.
There are thousands here and I’ll bet that whatever you’re wanting to talk about is already started somewhere here. Look first.

* Do enjoy Netflix!
It’s not always perfect, but it’s a great way to discover movies and share them with others. See new releases, learn about classics. Find rare gems. The Netflix site has some oddities to it (to be sure), but together – as a community – we can find workarounds and tricks to maximize the potential of this movie service. Expand your horizons! Share what you’ve learned.

WHAT NOT TO DO

Here’s the deal: In most circumstances, we like to give second chances, so we’ll send you a warning if you step across any of the lines listed below. Subsequent violations can result in Community banning without warning. But this is just a guideline. There may be cases where judgment is swift. It's a case-by-case thing.

* Don’t advertise other goods and services or use this site for commercial purposes.
Profiles and postings that consist primarily of such promotions (and/or spam) may be terminated at any time.

* Harvesting or otherwise collecting information about others, including e-mail (without their consent, is NOT allowed.) Group creators can see your email address (even though others cannot) so be cautious. You can usually tell “legitimate” groups from phishers…

* Don’t forget the children.
Take the opportunity to filter your content responsibly. If you would hesitate to show your avatar or nickname or comments to a child, your mum, or Uncle Bob, that means it needs to be managed. So, ask yourself that question as you upload your stuff and moderate accordingly. If you don’t, it’s likely that your account will be reviewed then banned by us. We’re unpaid, and often grumpy. Don’t push it.

* Don’t be obscene in your avatar icon. Don’t upload content that is illegal or prohibited. (Oh, we know you're ripping lots of those movie star images, movie stills, and posters that you stick in the photo section. It's not legal in many cases, and if we are ever asked to remove some of it, we will - because it's wrong. But that's all i'll say about it for now.) If we find you doing this, we’ll send you a warning. If we find you doing it again, we’ll ban your account.

* Do not add other people's real names (if they use a nickname), addresses or phone number to your posts.

* Don’t vent your frustrations, rant, or bore the brains out of other members.
Rant about Netflix if you want. But keep it in check. We’re not Netflix and we all agree Netflix does some good stuff and some bad stuff. Get over it, and help us all figure how to get the most out of our accounts. If you have conspiracy issues, go somewhere else. It’s juvenile and unsophisticated. Go make your own community for that.

* Attacking people on a personal level is not okay.
This means you can disagree with anyone (e.g. “your ideas are all screwed up”) but if you make it a personal assault (e.g. “you're an asshole”) you will be banned. If we see you trying, at least, to be a good citizen, we may cut you slack, but we’ll make a quick decision if you’re being unruly.

* This Netflix Community is not a venue for you to harass, abuse, impersonate, or intimidate others. If we receive a valid complaint about your conduct, we’ll might send you a warning or just ban your account outright.

* Don’t be creepy.
You know the guy. Don't be that guy.

Here are some other things to keep in mind:

Other People (their content, their behavior)
You will see and read all sorts of things here, some of which may offend you. If you are offended by a photo or discussion you can click away from it. If you think there's immediate cause for serious harm or concern, you can report content and/or someone's behavior to Administrative staff who will try to help. Links to me, the community creator (droidmaker) abound. Find one. Send me a note.

Surefire Ways to Get Banned
Lots of anger, hostility, personal attacks, obscenity and flagrant disregard for community behavior GENERALLY COMBINED with a paucity of personal information about yourself. This means, if you just create a quick profile with nothing about you, no “proof” you’re even a member with movie tastes, friends, or honest desire to share here, and then go on some kind of rampage, you’re probably going to get banned and your posts removed. So don’t do it. There’s really no point.

Personal Responsibility
Always use caution when giving out any personally identifying information about yourself or your children in any public forum like this. “A Netflix Community” does not control or endorse the content, messages or information found on this site, therefore, we specifically disclaim any liability with regard to any actions resulting from your participation in it.

In Conclusion
We’ve crafted these guidelines to ensure that everyone within the community has the experience they want. We’re all in this together so it’s important that you understand the importance of moderating your content responsibly. If you don't feel that you can abide by our Community Guidelines as outlined above, maybe this community isn't for you.

If you ever have any questions or comments, remember, we are unaffiliated with Netflix, so direct them to me, or the admins here; we’ll try to keep those lines of communication clear and open. Like you, we’re just unpaid volunteers and participants. So be nice.

That is one thing that NF can make more clear. I would say either take the link down or make a transfer page before coming to this site that explains that this site is not run by NF and the only thing it has in common is that they share some members and both involve a love of movies.

As far as Microwaved, if you can't tell the difference in a real cat being microwaved(which I think we would all agree is sick) and an animated gif that is just absurdly funny(like lol cats and Caturdays) then there is no help for ya.

Good job droidmaker and everyone, now if all the young 'uns will just pay attention to the rules we will all be set.

I can tell it's not real but some people think it's "cool."

Not only that but I never posted a gif with a microwaved cat. Not once, now I've posted a few pics of cats talking about killing people, but hey that's the way I roll.

I agree with at the very least one of those disclaimer pages! lol That thing that says stop! you are leaving blah, blah, blah, do you wish to continue! That gets netflix totally out of the responsibility issue.

Microwave looks creepy

You DO realize that is Microwaved's avatar, don't you? Or are you in actuality a talking dog??

And where do you get the idea that either of them work for Netflix?

But I *really* am an evil clown. Why won't anyone believe me?

Haha! Yes and you have top secret clown business to perform!

i won't speak to the microwaved or spindady avatars, although i'm pretty sure neither are current or former employees...

but you are totally correct -- that this shouldn't have a link from netflix. to be candid, i first set this up while I was the director of community at netflix and wanted to experiment with it - as i did with the blog. perhaps the last thing i did while employed was insert the link from the community to here. And ask the team to make an alias that made "community.netflix.com" the same thing as "netflixcommunity.ning.com" -- but in hindsight, it shouldn't be connected and the URL should go back to the way it was.

I have alerted folks at netflix about the situation, and they agree and it will be removed - but i imagine its lower priority than many initiatives there, and it probably will remain for at least a few weeks more... an unfortunate consequence and I apologize for my role in the confusion.

But the fact is that in spite of the link, you must sign up here distinctly -- nothing automatic comes from netflix -- you agree to the rules of this place separately, and we have our own very clear disclaimers - so we do the best we can in this circumstance. I urge you to leave if any of this makes you uncomfortable or is still unclear. I give most people here credit to understand that this is NING and not Netflix.

I find your attitude, Manuel, unneccessarily confrontational and hostile. And I'm really not clear why you believe that so many members here are staff at netflix. there are about 28 in total (out of about 1700), and those that are all disclose that.

Good points dharma -- i thought about making this only for members -- but you know - lots of people join, quit, rejoin, etc. and i wouldn't want that to be an issue. I also like that you can invite your other friends to connect to you here whether they are netflix users or not (something netflix Friends doesn't allow for) so i kinda liked that...

and while it does cause some potential exposure from spamming/marketing... i dunno... i prefer a lighter, more open forum for movie lovers. Netflix really is good for movie lovers (in my opinion) and anyone who wants to share movie ideas should be able to here.

Anyway, less management is better, and while I ask people to offer this member page, it's optional. But we'll see how it all evolves. It's still more than 97% members, i think.
