I have a hard time finding SUSPENSE movies!

I know it sounds rediculous, but I have a very hard time finding the type of suspense that my mother and I can watch together.

Here is what we like... simple plots (nothing political), realistic (nothing supernatural), good clear speaking voices (no hard-to-hear whispers), little or no sex, little nudity, little swearing.

We like the typical stuff like someone walks into a dark house with a door left open and asks... "anyone here?" three or four times when you KNOW no one will ever reply! Or the person being chased who insists on turning around to see if the killer is still there and oops! they fall down. And then there is always the car that won't start!

Movies like Vacancy, Joy Ride, Rest Stop, and such. I wish I could search suspense or thrillers by PG13. Any suggestions on how I should search? Or do you have a good review list I can see?

Thanks !!! Darlene

II think if you're looking for that narrow a concept in movies, you might want to Google “Disney”. I believe they do have a PG -13 offshoot but can’t remember the name.

Good luck.

Not sure what you mean. Not looking for Disney movies but for a way to search on Netflix. Does Disney even make thrillers?

It looks like McWhammer fixed you right up, Darlene, but what I meant was not that you'd be looking for Disney movies, only that you might find the name of their PG-13 offshoot (it might be Miramax) which would list their current and maybe even past releases. I would ignore Pixar, as I know they're anime.

Alfred Hitchcock.

Not quite what I'm talking about. Too old.

I also have a hard time finding good suspenseful/thriller type films. I found only a select few in the past year that I really enjoyed and would recommend. I am still sifting through, and finding new ones, but I have as hard a time as you do.

Try Cellular. It is rated PG-13, has Kim Basinger and Jason Statham. I found it to be pretty thrilling, and enjoyable!

Also, I enjoyed The Hitcher (2007 Version). A lot of people seemed to prefer the original, which I have not seen yet, but I absolutely loved The Hitcher... very underrated. Only problem, it is heavy on gore, so that may be a problem.

Here are a few more I rated highly since signing up for Netflix. Please, give them a try. Most are PG-13!

Flightplan (2005)
Red Eye (2005)
Paparazzi (2004)
Shooter (R rated... mostly for language. This one is about a hired Sniper... so a little violent as well)
All of the Bourne Trilogy - just be careful to watch them in order (By release date. They are all PG-13)
I also just started in on the "Ocean's series" (Ocean's Eleven, Twelve, Thirteen). They seem to be all right so far, if you aren't annoyed with all of the tabloid stars in it (Pitt, Clooney, etc.)

I think most of the films I listed are good for viewing with your mother. As far as the R-rated ones, you could look at the detail for why they are rated R... mostly language and gore. As long as she is not too offended by that, I think you'll be fine!

Thank you for the recommendations!

That is so funny what you said about "if you aren't annoyed with all the the tabloid stars in it"

I wanted to try the new Hitcher and now I will. Funny thing, my mother can put up with gore... and she's 85!!! She can watch someone get stabbed, sliced, or even chopped up. But she can't stand humping! She is such a riot to watch movies with. If the characters are being stupid she roots for them to get killed.

Ha ha. You are welcome :)

Well, as far as The Hitcher goes, I think she'll have a lot to root for, one way or the other. I know what you mean though, not to be insensitive, but older people seem to get riled up when people are trying to get away from the baddies. They love seeing that.

I know I didn't have a lot of suggestions, but I'm the same as you, still searching for some quality thrillers on Netflix. They are hard to come by, especially if you go for ones not rated R or otherwise unsavory...

If/When I find some more good suspense films, I will come back and post them here on your thread. I think I'll be getting some next week from my queue, hopefully. More so in the next month.

I actually learned something new thanks to you!!! On the link you gave me above for Cellular, I noticed something I never knew about before (only been on netflix 2 months)... it's that button I can click on for the Common Sense notes! My goodness, exactly what I've been looking for! It tells me exactly what I want to know. I wish all the movies had those notes!

Oh, Ok. I didn't know you were a new member to Netflix. Yeah, I definitely use those common sense notes on some movies, just to see what all the hubbub is about, why it's rated R or Unrated, etc.

They are very helpful and convenient. Tell you what to expect, but be careful, sometimes they spoil parts of the movie (By telling you someone is going to get blown to smithereens and stuff like that, Ha)! Glad I could be of assistance.

Ha, I've been a member for over 4 years and somehow never noticed the Common Sense notes either. Nice to find out about the feature.

It's a little hidden, but I find it very useful at times. Thought everyone else knew about it :)
