About Me:
Ex-Pat From Manchester UK now living in NY for seventeen years have two children, three cats, one fish and one recently demised frog. Love movies for the nostalgia, for the family connections, that they remind me of back home, that they transport me to the future, or to the past. Best of all I love movies that make me laugh my socks off "Love dysfunction, it make me feel at home"

Moviemom's Blog

Long live Netflix, my source for a taste of home.

I have cable but my local cable company will not provide BBC America. I'm sure if they did it would cost me more than the $16.99 a month I pay to Netflix who can provide me with anything worth watching from this side of the pond or the other. Netflix has broadened my movie horizons making the best of (or worst) film, televsion, docs, and offerings from all four corners of the globe available when I want it. I love Netflix. Cable sucks.

Hi Jane...My mom goes by "Janie", it is a coincidence...now if your middle initial is
"M", than that would kinda freak me out! =) What have you been watching, my British friend? I just watched "Stanlet and Iris", have you seen it? It's on Watch Instantly".A lovely film. So touching and it speaks so true to the heart. Don't ever feel that you must apologize for "rambling on" (as you put it...)about England, to me it's like a holiday or real treat to talk about it. I'm glad to have a NF friend with such simular tastes in films and series. Kinda fun to talk about...Well,I hope that all is well with you and look forward to hearin' from you soon. Take care,Artgirl.

House of Cards is indeed memorable. You can devour it (all 3 discs) in short order or try to savor it over several weeks. Decisions, decisions, decisions...as they say. I preferred the savoring approach. Mostly it goes from one high to another. The nicest thing about DVD is every now and again you can rewind a bit to catch the details in key segments. Enjoy, I know you will. Lee

Hi Jane, first of all I have to tell you that my mum's initials are also JC and her first name is Jane as well.=)... I just had a conversation with another NF friend who is doing a Shakespeare self-study this summer, and I was telling her all about the Old Globe Shakespeare Festival "under the stars". We have gone the last 2 summers and love it ! We are subscribers to the year-round theatre and have really enjoyed that as well. So I am assuming that you went to the original Globe in England? Now I'M jealous! (But I think that you win, in my book!) My dream is to live in England someday. It somehow feels familiar, like home, when I watch all the movies and programs from the BBC.(Although I have sadly never been...). I have BBC on our cable, but find that they don't run many classic TV series or newer programs that are of higher quality.(Mainly Robin Hood and Dr Who...)So I mainly get my fix on NF as well.(So don't feel too badly...) Hey, have you seen Doc Martin?. I just watched it and was impressed with the witty dialog and unique approach to a comedy/drama format.NF only carries the 1st season on Watch Instantly and I am looking online for the other 2 seasons. (Need to get a fix, now that I am hooked =0). I also love 10,000 Acres of Sky, have you seen it? If I may ask, why did you move to the States? I would love to hear any and everything about England that you would like to share with a complete stranger.=/...My very distant relations are from the UK, but there are no remaining connections. Are there shows that you love and could suggest that are not generally known here in the States? (OK,you've gotten yourself in a jam telling me that you are British! Sorry about that...). Looking forward to future talks with ya! Cheerio...(Just kiddin') Artgirl.

and Kate Blanchett in "Elizabeth" and "Elizabeth The Golden Age", and Glenda Jackson in "Elizabeth R". I think we could go on for awhile. Notice that I left Mirren out. I have moments when I love her work, and moments when I don't like her. I haven't figured out why yet.

Hi JC! I saw your request and would be happy to add you as a pal. I visited your NF page and really enjoyed your reviews. I can always spot a "fellow writer"... You are 72% simular to my taste in film... I laughed aloud when you said that movies win over books! I love to read, but my collection is well over 900 movies and my husband is well over 2000 books... so I suppose that means that movies win for me too! Isn't "Buds of May" a fun and kind program? That's what I loved about it years ago when I discovered it on PBS. If you like Brit stuff, I'm the girl for suggestions. Let me know if I can be of help. Take care, Artgirl.

I fell in love with "My House in Umbria" solely due to Maggie Smith's superb acting. She took me slowly into her alcholic haze and what a surprise as she showed us who her character really was. As for Joan Plowright, I agree with you that she is also a gem. While we're at it what about Vanessa Redgrave in "Julia" and Julie Walters in "Educating Rita"?

This is fun!

Can I guess that you were drawn to those movies because of the Dames?

Hi! Thanks for your comment. Yes, I have seen The Monsoon Wedding and I love it. I have never been to the super-turistic Majorca, but i hope to go one day. My mother is from Sevilla and that city is very especial for me. However, my two most favorite cities in Spain are Granada and Toledo. I highly recommend them to you :-) Do you travel back to the UK very often? I try to go to Europe at least once a year, so my daughter can experience the connection with half of her roots... It is hard, isn't it?
