About Me:
Have loved movies since I was a kid...remember seeing films at my smalltown movie house at 4 or 5...became a compulsion...film classes in college, L.A. production work w/ directors and finally some of my own documentary work on Homeless and overseas in Yugoslavia during the Balkan War.
Will give any film a chance, but my cat has to dig it too. She's more particular than I am. I enjoy new asian cinema, french new wave -goddard, melville, truffuat, Renais. Love cinematography =integral in film I watch...teach English as a second Language. Have travelled a lot -lived over seas in London for 2 years, worked with refugees in Balkan for 9 years..came home to USA and found not that many folks understood what I had gone thru or seen...always find solacein a movie theater or on a tube. Divorced last year. Hang out with my cat -knows what she likes, yet doesn't talk back - very visually oriented. ALWAYS open to suggestions and other peoples reviews...I shpouuld write more considering all the films I see/have seen. more later.

What about something like films showing a real perspective or globally significant events, crises and conflict? Should the time frame include all history or more recent times? Post-Vietnam? Post-WWII? Call it Our World or Current/Recent/Historical Events in Film? I think it would be great to have a place to discuss films like this because I'd like my eyes opened to things I hadn't known or considered possible and to see what others got that I didn't see in films I've seen. I'm just unsure about how open or narrow the focus should be. What do you think?

Have you thought about starting a group more specialized than the existing "foreign films"? I don't know if you'd want it focused around conflicts or the Balkans, but I'd enjoy either.

Hi Phred, I admire your life experience, and especially your working with refugees in the Balkans. If more people do what you've done, the world would be in better shape... I too love films - it's like a universal language. Loved No Country For Old Men, Judgment at Nuremberg.

I saw No Man's Land & enjoyed very much. Tito and Me was my first Balkan film, many years ago. Saw Before The Rain a dozen or so years ago. Warriors is the only movie I've seen about the conflicts made from the outside. Have you seen it? I've seen nothing by Kusturica--will add to my queue.
I was raised by two liberal school teachers who, at least, tried to teach me that learning is fun & lifelong, to be aware globally (to be a better world citizen) and open to new experiences.
So many tragedies--It would be nice if one stunningly nice thing could happen this year. Zimbabwe? Darfur? Peace in Colombia or Sri Lanka?
My movie collection is far less erudite or artistically meaningful than those you mentioned in your profile: Merchant/Ivory, Bridget Jones, Harry Potter and Frankenstein. I made a list on Netflix of what I like most of the DVDs I own:

Nine years in the Balkans? Incredible. You're right in that Americans ignored it. Probably because they think the Balkans are that family who bought the house around the corner: Serbia, Montenegro and their lovely daughters Croatia, Bosnia and Slovenia. The world needs more like you. Teaching ESL must be challenging too. Are many Americans interested?
