Just FYI: The Netflix search engine has been rigged to bring up "The Water Horse" EVERY time anyone puts the word "the" in the search engine. To thwart this obvious new form of payola, don't use the word "the." You'll get what you're looking for without it.

This has been going on for weeks now, and gawd knows how much unadvertised-as-such advertising this has generated for that film. It might be a good one; I just despise the sneaky stealth promotion and hope to discourage it in the future.

You go your way and I'll go mine...I was being very explicit-very succinct, and very clear.
I did not use "Your" term "Film is Film" [ once again your ego driven sense of righteousness-completely taking my carefully constructed argument out of context...at this point who the hell cares...]
And-by the way(just for kicks, mind you) I have shared my argument with at least two other folks-who understand what I am saying.
I have nothing more to offer...this conversation is as dead as a doornail.

Of course we are both being "self-righteous" when we take a stand for a conceptual definition. We are merely engaged in ego-identification...it's just a ritual -ya know?
Takes one to know one.
Peace.

I It would appear by your argument that the issue is with
you-not the hypothetical girl or her parents.
That would be their 'hypothetical choice'-whether or not to agree to the cash transaction(lotta money to be made - and stardom too!).

There are countless pornographic sites on the web and there are countless young people 'getting naked'.
Is this art? No...
Is it film art...
No it is not.
It is little more than a version of a home movie.

The problem with your current observation re the "anything goes..art for arts sake ..." argument is that you are not exercising a critically informed pattern of judgment.
It is instead a value based on your own personal issues with child pornography-child molestation- and/or pedophiles.
My original argument had everything to do with the freedom of self expression which is necessary in order to elevate all "ART" to levels unknown to us-otherwise we'd still be watching films which are trapped in a timeless vacuum!

If you might step outside your box of thought for a moment- and take into consideration that all manner of a human beings activities:dramas and tragedies and comedies-all are the domain in which artists find material- then perhaps you might see that there is room for many types of self expression.

In fact it is all valid- and most likely will be of value to another human being out there somewhere.

I am not addressing the subjective nature of morality
Never was.
Art and morality are separate subjects.
Truly.
Like apples and oranges-literally.

Now-for the sake of an argument- let's just say we chose to stage an argument regarding morality in the 21st century.
One sub chapter might have to do with say-'internet porn'.
Another might be -'violence in video games'.
Another might be-'The medias irresponsibility in providing balanced and informed journalism.'
etc.

Then we'd be on the same page.
If you would really like to learn from the mensches of media criticism and more on the subject of morality-I might suggest reading Marshall McLuhan ,or Mark Crispin Miller etc.

So just for curiosity's sake- how offensive do you find a film where say twenty gangsters are machine gunned down in a matter of seconds?
Or consider-perhaps 100,000 plus (and counting) civilians were murdered in Iraq to date- at the hands of our tax supported military(you and I fund this by the way.)

Now- I will generously concede that you may have known someone personally who was the victim of child abuse.
That may or may not be your truth-I do not know..
But for a moment-consider the horrors of starvation which children are faced in Darfur.
Is this a form of child abuse?

We vote for our leaders...consider your personal power and the responsibility to truly make a difference next election-or better yet-I hope you will take some of that self righteous attitude and put it to work to spread love and peace in this world.
Movies are not real.
Bless you.
